Componiendo y cantando desde los 16 años, el descubrimiento de Jimmy James se produjo en 1962 con su canción '''Come to me softly ''. Poco después se une a The Vagabonds, una de las bandas más grandes de Jamaica en ese momento, y se embarcan en una gira por el Reino Unido. Tras su enorme éxito deciden prolongar su estancia allí y, finalmente, se establecen definitivamente en el Reino Unido.
