El Corte Inglés Málaga hosts the conference of the 2nd cycle of Expediciones Científicas, titled “El viaje que cambió la biología: Charles Darwin y la expedición del Beagle”, delivered by Dr. Enrique Viguera Mínguez, Professor of Genetics at the Faculty of Sciences (UMA), on Friday, 9 October at 7:30 p.m. Organised by Encuentros con la Ciencia.

Between 1831 and 1836, a young naturalist of just 22 embarked on a journey that would forever change our understanding of life on Earth. Charles Darwin joined the crew of the HMS Beagle on a cartographic expedition that took him along the coasts of South America, the Galápagos Islands and numerous points across the southern hemisphere, in a voyage that lasted nearly five years.

What began as an opportunity for a young man interested in geology and natural history soon became the seed of a scientific revolution. Darwin observed the astonishing diversity of species, the peculiarities of the Galápagos finches and tortoises, the fossils of extinct mammals in Patagonia and the geological evidence of gradual changes in the Earth’s crust.

These observations, recorded in field notebooks, diaries and letters, would feed his ideas for more than twenty years, culminating in 1859 with the publication of “On the Origin of Species”, where Darwin presented his theory of evolution by natural selection.

This outreach talk will trace the different stages of the Beagle’s voyage, explore the discoveries that most impacted Darwin and reveal how careful observation of nature, combined with analytical skill and scientific rigour, led him to formulate one of the most transformative ideas in the history of biology.
