Las canciones de Samuel Barber ofrecen la belleza de su producción en microcosmos. Este Box 3CD de sesenta y cinco canciones lo convierte en el estudio más completo registrado hasta ahora. La mayoría de las canciones menos conocidas e inéditas del CD 3 se remontan a los años de estudiante de Barber, pero comenzó a componer joven y siempre se inclinó por escribir para voces y responder a la poesía. Barber podía leer a Proust en francés, Goethe en alemán, Dante en italiano y Neruda en español, y su erudita selección de poetas y poemas reflejaba facetas de su carácter complejo: una melancolía inquieta por un lado y un ingenio travieso por el otro. Su ascendencia en parte irlandesa lo atrajo hacia Joyce, Yeats y James Stephens, y su interés en su herencia celta lo impulsó a escribir su canción más conocida, impulsó la escritura de su ciclo de canciones más conocido, Hermit Songs Op.29. El pianista Filippo Farinelli ha realizado estudios completos de la producción de canciones de Berg, Ravel, Dallapiccola y Jolivet, junto con colegas que se han sumergido en el idioma. Aquí también se le une un trío de cantantes italianos que se muestran como en casa con los estados de ánimo melancólicos y cambiantes de Barber, el compositor de canciones. Este proyecto es otro triunfo de Filippo Farinelli, infatigable pianista y promotor de prestigiosos proyectos discográficos, como las canciones completas de Jolivet, Berg, Dallapiccola y Ravel, y proyectos instrumentales de Koechlin, Jolivet, Hindemith y Debussy.
